Welcome to Happy Healthy SJSU!
Despite the prevalence of mental illness in our society, its treated as a taboo subject, surrounded by stigma. This stigma, whether it be due to a lack of knowledge or a lack of understanding, is absolutely detrimental to those individuals suffering from a treatable mental illness. Unfortunately, the fear of judgment that individuals anticipate as a consequence of mental health stigma leads many to avoid seeking out treatment altogether.
Moreover, undiagnosed and untreated mental illnesses amongst college communities are on the rise, with young adult suicides growing in frequency as a result. With all of the pressures that modern college students face, mental illnesses are becoming more prominent within the campus environment, and because of the stigma surrounding these illnesses, they go largely untreated.
This is why it's important for people, especially young adults, to be more aware of mental health, as well as the stigma surrounding mental illness and the consequences that this stigma has.
Happy Healthy SJSU was created with this in mind. In conjunction with the Student Wellness Center, Happy Healthy SJSU's goal is to educate students on the abundance of mental illness and the surrounding stigma, and start the discussion about mental health on campus as a way to alleviate the stigma that prevents many students from getting the necessary help and support.
If you want to help lessen stigma on the San Jose State campus by becoming more educated and aware of topics relating to mental health, be sure to check back regularly for the latest information. You can also follow Happy Healthy SJSU on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date.
